How the gap widens as CTC grows

Dividing CTC by twelve overstates your salary at every level, but by a share that grows as the package does.

₹2–5 LPA

Entry-level and early-career packages. Income tax is usually nil, so PF is what separates CTC from cash.

₹5–10 LPA

Most first promotions land here. Still largely tax-free under the new regime once the standard deduction is applied.

₹10–20 LPA

Where tax starts to matter. This range straddles the rebate threshold and the marginal relief band.

₹20–50 LPA

Senior and specialist packages. Variable pay grows, and more of each increment goes to tax than to you.

₹50 LPA and above

Surcharge enters the picture above ₹50 lakh of taxable income, along with its own marginal relief.

Common questions

Why does take-home fall as a share of CTC when the package gets bigger?

Because tax is progressive and PF is not. On a ₹5 lakh package there is effectively no income tax, so nearly everything except PF and employer-side costs reaches you. By ₹50 lakh a large slice is taxed at 30%, and above the surcharge threshold you are paying tax on the tax.

That is why the percentages in the table above slide downwards. It is not a fee. It is the slab structure working as designed.

Are these figures what I will actually be paid?

They are worked examples on a stated set of assumptions: Basic at 50% of CTC, PF capped at the ₹15,000 statutory wage, a gratuity provision inside CTC, Karnataka's Professional Tax, the new regime and no variable pay.

Change any of those and the number changes, sometimes by thousands a month. Each page shows the range, and the main calculator lets you enter your own structure.

Why are there pages for 3.5 LPA and 4.2 LPA but not every decimal?

Because a page is only worth having if it can say something specific. These values reflect packages people are actually offered, campus offers cluster around 3.2, 3.6 and 4.2 LPA, and half-lakh steps dominate the early-career range.

Generating every decimal between ₹2 lakh and ₹1 crore would produce thousands of pages that differ only in one number. If a value you need is missing, put it straight into the calculator. That is the same engine these pages use.

How these examples are produced

  • Tax rules are the ones in force for Tax Year 2026–27, under the Income-tax Act, 2025 (in force from 1 April 2026).
  • EPF and pension figures follow EPFO’s published contribution rules.
  • Professional Tax is included only for states where we have a rule we trust, and named as missing where we do not.
  • Every assumption behind the estimate is shown on screen and can be changed.
  • The calculator runs entirely in your browser. Your salary is never sent anywhere.
